The Real Cost of VPS Hosting India (2026): Hidden Fees

Cost of VPS Hosting India

The Real Cost of VPS Hosting in India (2026): Why Fixed Plans and Hidden Fees Are Costing You More

What is the real cost of VPS hosting India? → The real cost of a VPS plan is more than the price on the plan card. You also pay for backups, control panels, Windows licences, extra data, GST, and card fees. VPS costs often go up when you renew. In our example, a ₹1,000 plan becomes about ₹4,800 a month.

Think about buying a Car. The base price looks cheap. Then taxes, road taxes, model choice, and insurance. By the time you pay, the number is very different.

VPS hosting works the same way. The plan card shows the base price. In this post, we look at everything that gets added after it. We use 2026 numbers, so you can work out what you will really pay. Let's dive in.

Quick words

  • VPS: your own private part of a big computer (a server) on the internet. It's like renting a flat in a big building.

  • CPU: the brain of the server. RAM: its short-term memory. Disk: where its files are saved.

  • Renewal: when your plan ends and you pay again. The price is often higher.

  • Bandwidth: how much data goes in and out of your server each month.

  • GST: the 18% tax added to bills in India.

 Quick Summary: TL;DR

  • The plan price is not your real price. In our example, a ₹1,000 plan costs about ₹4,778 a month with backups, cPanel, and GST.

  • Prices jump at renewal. One popular small plan goes from $6.49 to $11.99. A bigger one goes from $12.99 to $28.99 when the offer ends.

  • Licences can cost more than the server. cPanel starts at about $30 a month in 2026. A Windows licence adds roughly €3 to €5 per core.

  • Fixed plans waste things. If your needs don't match the bundle, you pay for CPU, RAM, or disk that you never use.

  • Hourly billing can save money. A stopped VPS still costs money, but if you remove the compute and detached disk, you pay just for storage.

How Does a ₹1,000 VPS Become a ₹4,800 Bill?

A ₹1,000 VPS plan can become a ₹4,778 bill each month when you add essential services: weekly backups, a cPanel licence, and 18% GST. The server is only about one-fifth of the total. So always add up the whole bill, not just the VPS price on the plan card.

This is an example of the real cost of VPS hosting India, not a real quote. We picked a ₹1,000 server. Then we added a normal backup fee and the cheapest 2026 cPanel licence. We changed dollars into rupees at about ₹95 per dollar, so you can properly understand the costs for VPS hosting.

cPanel is a control panel. It's a dashboard that helps you manage your websites, data, and content without typing a single command. It's sold as a licence, which you pay for each month, for each server.

If you skip cPanel and use a free control panel, the same server costs ₹1,200 plus GST, which is ₹1,416. The licence makes the big difference between those two bills.

Not every VPS provider charges for all of this, and not every website needs cPanel. The main lesson is simple: ask what is included before you compare prices.

What Does a Basic VPS Cost Without cPanel?

If you only need a normal VPS plan, you do not need cPanel, a paid control panel, or a separate Windows licence. You mainly pay for the VPS resources: CPU, RAM, storage and IP.

For example, Iotamine's New Delhi VPS starts at around ₹548/month for 1 vCPU, 2GB RAM, 15GB SSD and 1 IPv4, with 5TB bandwidth included. It is billed hourly rather than as a fixed plan.

Which Hidden Costs Should You Check Before You Buy?

Check seven things before you buy a VPS hosting: the renewal price, the control panel licence, the Windows licence, backups, extra data, idle resources, and tax and currency fees. Each one can add more to your bill than the server itself.

Hidden cost

What to look for

What we found in 2026

1. Renewal price

The price after the offer ends

A popular small plan costs $6.49 now and $11.99 at renewal (+85%). A bigger one costs $12.99, then $28.99 (+123%).

2. Control panel (Optional)

cPanel is paid for each server, each month

cPanel's 2026 plans cost about $30 to $70 a month. A WebHostingToday report dated 5 October 2026 says prices will go up again in 2027.

3. Windows licence (Optional)

A fee for each CPU core, plus fees for each remote desktop user

Some providers charge about €3 to €5 per core every month. A Windows server with 4 cores adds roughly €12 to €20.

4. Backups

A percentage of the server price, or a fee for each GB saved

DigitalOcean charges 20% of the server price for weekly backups.

5. Extra data (bandwidth)

The price after the free amount is used up

DigitalOcean charges $0.01 for each GiB over the free amount. AWS charges about $0.09 per GB for normal outgoing data.

6. Idle resources

Whether a stopped server still costs money

A switched-off DigitalOcean server still costs money. So does a stopped Iotamine server. On Iotamine, you can stop the VPS and keep only the disk (see below ); then you have to only pay for storage

7. Tax and currency

Is the price before or after GST? Is it in dollars?

Hostinger's India plans show prices without GST. Dollar bills also add card fees on top of the exchange rate.

A few notes to keep this fair:

  • Renewal prices: Some VPS providers show the renewal price on the plan card. Others don't. Hostinger shows it, which is the right way to do it. Find the renewal price before you pay, and write it down.

  • Extra data: Not every VPS hosting provider charges for extra data. Some give a lot of free data and don't charge extra. Read the small print.

  • Windows: The per-core fees above come from European providers. Indian providers set their own prices, so ask for a quote in rupees.

Why Do Fixed Plans Cost You More?

Fixed VPS plans put CPU, RAM, and disk all of these things together in one fixed mix VPS hosting plan. If your needs are uneven, you pay for things you don't use. The extra cost shows up as waste, higher prices at renewal, and forced upgrades when you outgrow the plan.

Think of a fixed tiffin plan. You only want dal or rice, but the plan comes with sweets,  roti, and sabzi. You pay for all of it, whether you eat it or not.

Here is a real example of VPS cost. One popular Indian plan list keeps the same mix at every step: 1 CPU, 4 GB RAM, and 50 GB disk. KVM 1 is 1 CPU, 4 GB RAM, and 50 GB disk. KVM 2 is 2 CPUs, 8 GB RAM, and 100 GB disk. KVM 4 is 4 CPUs, 16 GB RAM, and a 200 GB disk. In India, the starting prices are ₹599, ₹799, and ₹1,099 a month, before GST.

Now look at three common types of work. We use Iotamine's published hourly prices (₹0.50 per CPU, ₹0.042 per GB of RAM, and ₹0.0026 per GB of disk) to put a rupee value on the waste.

What your work needs

The plan you must buy

What you pay for but don't use

What the unused part is worth (per month)

Needs a lot of CPU: 4 CPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB (a build server)

KVM 4 (4 / 16 / 200)

12 GB RAM, 160 GB disk

₹662

Needs a lot of RAM: 2 CPU, 16 GB RAM, 80 GB (a database or cache)

KVM 4 (4 / 16 / 200)

2 CPU, 120 GB disk

₹945

Needs a lot of disk: 2 CPU, 4 GB RAM, 150 GB (files and media)

KVM 4 (4 / 16 / 200)

2 CPU, 12 GB RAM, 50 GB disk

₹1,176

Here is the honest part of VPS cost. Waste does not always mean a higher bill. The starting price of ₹1,099 for KVM 4 is lower than building the same setup yourself at per-resource prices. On Iotamine's rate card, the custom versions cost about ₹1,736, ₹1,454, and ₹1,222 a month, with one IP, before GST. So in the first term, sometimes the fixed plan can be cheaper.

The extra cost of a fixed plan shows up in three other places:

  1. At renewal. The global price of that same KVM 4 plan goes from $12.99 to $28.99. That is about 123% more. It's roughly ₹1,234 to ₹2,754 at ₹95 per dollar. India prices are lower than a plain dollar-to-rupee change, so check your own renewal price.

  2. When you outgrow the plan. If you need more RAM, you buy the next plan. It comes with more CPU and disk that you may not need.

  3. When your work is uneven. The more unusual your needs, the more you pay for parts you don't use.

How to find your real average price

The first price only lasts for a while. Use this simple formula to see what you will really pay each month:

Average monthly price = (months at the first price × first price + months at the renewal price × renewal price) ÷ total months

Example (made up): ₹600 for 12 months, then ₹1,100 for the next 24 months. (12 × 600 + 24 × 1,100) ÷ 36 = ₹933 a month. That is 56% more than the ₹600 you saw on the card.

Does Hourly Billing Have Hidden Costs? How to Pay Only for What You Use

Hourly billing has a few small traps(but not at Iotamine); you can avoid most of them. Simply stop the VPS, detach your storage disk, and delete the compute instance. This immediately kills the CPU and RAM charges—meaning you only pay a fraction of the cost for storage, and your data stays safe on the disk until you start a new server from it.

Hourly billing is fair, but only if you know how it works. The key is that a cloud VPS is not one single thing. It has three separate parts, and each part is billed on its own, by the hour:

  1. Compute: the CPU and RAM.

  2. Storage: the disk.

  3. Network: the IP address and the bandwidth.

So where does your data live? We asked Piyush Ladhar, the founder of Iotamine. "Everything on the server, like your website files, databases, and content, is saved on the disk," he explained. "Compute only processes that data."

That gives you a simple way to save money on a server you're not using:

  1. Stop the VPS.

  2. Detach its disk.

  3. Delete the compute.

Now the compute charge stops, and you pay only for the disk storage. Your data stays safe on it. Whenever you want to start, deploy a new VPS and choose the existing disk; the data and everything else stay the same.

The question must have crossed your mind too, right? What if this is a running project? Will the site go down, or will it show errors?

As per Iotamine, "There's no effect on your data,". "The project stays as it is. Your project, files, and databases are all on the disk, not in the CPU or RAM." The only thing to expect is that the site is offline while the whole VPS  is destroyed, because a deleted server doesn't serve visitors. That's normal.

Here is what it means in rupees. Take a small server with 1 CPU, 2 GB RAM, 30 GB disk, and one IP address. We used the same hourly rates as before, and all amounts are before GST:

  • Stopped but not deleted, for a full month: about ₹577. A stopped server still holds its CPU and RAM, so stopping alone does not stop the billing.

  • Delete the compute and keep only the disk: about ₹56 a month (30 GB × ₹0.0026 × 720 hours). That is about 90% less.

  • Keep the disk and the IP: about ₹156 a month. The IP costs ₹0.1389 an hour, which is about ₹100 a month.

This is great for test servers, projects you want to pause, or a client site that is waiting for approval. For a live site, do it at a quiet time. And if the data matters, take a snapshot first.

A few small things to know:

  • Stopping alone is not enough. Delete the compute to stop it from charging.

  • Part of an hour counts as a full hour. Use a server for 10 minutes, and you pay for an hour.

  • Whatever you keep, you pay for. A disk, an IP, or a snapshot is charged until you delete it. Snapshots are charged per GB per month, so clear old ones.

  • Data above the free 5 TB is charged per TB. At the time of writing, that is ₹600 per TB on the Delhi rate card. Check the pricing page for the current price.

  • You choose the size. There are no fixed plans, so you decide how big the server is.

Our post on how detachable volumes and IPs work shows these steps in detail.

How Do You Check a VPS Quote in 10 Minutes?

To check a VPS plan quote, ask seven questions and write down the answers: the renewal price, the control panel cost, the licence cost, the backup cost, the free data and the price after it, whether a stopped server costs money, and whether GST is included. Then work out the real monthly cost.

Send these questions to any provider. A clear answer in writing is a good sign.

  1. What's the renewal price, and how long does the offer last?

  2. Is a control panel licence included, or extra?

  3. Is the operating system licence included (especially Windows)?

  4. What do backups cost, and what do they cover?

  5. How much free data is included, and what is the price after it?

  6. Does a stopped server still cost money?

  7. Is the price before or after GST, and what currency is the bill in?

Then use this to find your real number:

Real monthly cost = (server + backups + licences + extra IPs + extra data) × 1.18 − GST you can claim back (if you're GST-registered)

If you're GST-registered and have a valid tax invoice, you can claim the GST back. Then your real cost is the amount before GST. If you're not registered, the full amount is your cost. This is general information, not tax advice.

Final Words on Cost of VPS Hosting India : TL;DR

  • Real cost of VPS hosting India: the plan price is only the start. Add renewal, licences, backups, extra data, idle resources, and GST.

  • Biggest surprises: the price jump at renewal (+85% to +123% in our examples), and control panel and Windows licences.

  • Fixed plans: cheaper in the first term if the bundle fits, and costlier when your needs are uneven, or the price goes up at renewal.

  • Hourly billing: flexible. Stop the server,  detach your storage disk, and delete the compute instance, and pay only for storage while it's idle.

  • Next step: send the seven questions to the providers on your list, then compare the real monthly numbers.

FAQ

How much does a VPS server cost per month in India?

In India, entry-level VPS hosting sticker prices range between ₹300 and ₹1,000 per month. However, the real cost of a VPS plan monthly typically reaches ₹1,400 to ₹4,800 per month after adding essential add-ons like control panel licences (e.g., cPanel), automated backups, and 18% GST.

Is cPanel mandatory for VPS hosting?

No, cPanel is completely optional. In 2026, a cPanel Solo licence costs around $29.99 (~₹2,849/mo), which often costs more than the VPS hardware itself. You can avoid this fee by managing the server via the Linux command line or using free/open-source control panels like CloudPanel or aaPanel.

How much does a Windows OS licence add to VPS hosting?

Windows Server licences are typically billed per CPU core, adding roughly €3 to €5 per core each month. For a standard 4-core VPS instance, a Windows licence adds approximately €12 to €20 (~₹1,100 to ₹1,800) per month on top of the server base price.

Is hourly billing cheaper than monthly?

It can be, for short jobs or work that changes, because you pay only for the hours you use. A stopped server still costs money, but on Iotamine you can delete the server and keep just the disk, so you pay only for storage.
